Coral Mushroom Poisonous Look-alikes
Coral mushrooms (Ramaria) are a type of fungi that can be found in various parts of the world. They are known for their distinctive shape, which often resembles a coral branch or a cluster of small fingers. While some coral mushrooms are edible, others are poisonous and it is not usually collected for the table due to their bland taste and insubstantial volume.
If you are looking to positively identify them its good to know some key look a likes:
Jellied False Coral Mushroom (Tremellodendron pallidum): This mushroom has a similar appearance to coral mushrooms, but is tough and leathery and tehrefore not edible. It is found in Europe and North America.
The Orange Jelly Coral Mushroom (Calocera viscosa): This mushroom is found in North America and has a coral-like appearance. It is not poisonous, but it is not considered edible either it is easily differentiated as it has a bright orange colour.
Salmon Coral (Ramaria formosa): This mushroom is within the same family (Ramaria) however is poisonous, it can be easily differentiated by its pink salmon colour.
It is important to note that there are many other less physiologically similar poisonous mushroom species that could potentially be mistaken for coral mushrooms. If you are not sure whether a mushroom is safe to eat, it is best to err on the side of caution and not consume it.
